Enhancing Taiwan's Power Grid: GE Vernova and TECO's Collaboration with Advanced STATCOM Technology

In a significant move to bolster Taiwan's power infrastructure, GE Vernova's Grid Solutions business (NYSE) has teamed up with TECO Electric and Machinery Co (TECO) to introduce cutting-edge STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) systems at key substations in central Taiwan. This collaboration marks a pivotal step towards supporting Taiwan Power Company's efforts to fortify its grid capabilities and integrate more renewable energy sources.

 

The ground-breaking ceremony at the ZhangGong Step-up Substation and YongXing Switchyard in Changhua County, Taiwan, symbolizes the commencement of this ambitious project. These substations, crucial nodes in Taiwan's electricity network, will each be equipped with ±200 Mvar STATCOM systems provided by GE Vernova. These systems, combined with TECO's expertise in civil works and site operations management, promise to enhance grid stability while facilitating the seamless integration of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro power.

Changhua County, where the substations are located, is a bustling hub for renewable energy projects and various high-tech industries. With a significant presence of electronics manufacturing and agricultural sectors, the county's dynamic economic landscape is poised to benefit greatly from enhanced grid reliability and renewable energy integration. The deployment of STATCOM technology at these substations is expected to mitigate the challenges posed by intermittent renewable energy production. By regulating voltage and reactive power, STATCOM systems play a crucial role in maintaining grid stability, safeguarding equipment, and ensuring uninterrupted power supply.

Mr. Pin Chang, President of TECO's Intelligence Energy Business Group, expressed confidence in the collaboration's ability to bolster Taiwan's renewable energy grid. Leveraging TECO's strong electromechanical expertise, combined with GE Vernova's advanced technology, the project aims to secure a more stable electricity supply for Taiwan.

Shailesh Mishra, Regional Leader for GE Vernova’s Grid System Integration business in APAC, highlighted the significance of this partnership in advancing Taiwan's renewable energy goals. By deploying state-of-the-art STATCOM technology, GE Vernova reaffirms its commitment to sustainable energy solutions that drive positive change on a global scale.

The STATCOM systems provided by GE Vernova are part of the broader category known as Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS). These systems are pivotal in mitigating voltage fluctuations and maintaining grid reliability, especially under varying renewable energy inputs. As Taiwan continues to expand its renewable energy capacity, STATCOM technology will play an increasingly critical role in optimizing power flow and ensuring the efficiency of the electricity grid.
